"Erya" and the Fish Character – The Transmutation
"Erya" is an ancient Chinese encyclopedia dating back to the 5th century BC. During ancient times, there were many kinds of fish characters; these different styles of "fish" have been innovatively combined and interpreted in both Western surrealistic paintings and in Chinese characters. The very different artistic styles now complement each other as Eastern and Western aesthetic philosophy, traditions, and practices integrate in the modern world.
In this artwork, there are a total of 38 different style of Chinese fish characters of “Erya” done by famous Chinese calligraphy master Dr. Hong Zhao, and these characters were aggressively interpreted by German artist, SIbylle Schwarz in one-line drawings in surrealism using the four "Chinese treasures" (Chinese Xuan paper, Chinese ink, Chinese brush and inkstone)

"LOOKING EAST - THE ART WORLD IN THE 21ST CENTURY"
TRANSMUTATION-TRACING THE PAST, DRAWING THE FUTURE
Nothing like this has ever happened before in the realm of World Art History.
21st Shanghai Art Fair, 2017/11-02-2017 ~ 11-05-2017
Bryce Reagan INC, USA
Booth #: E193
PART ONE:
1. Theme: TRANSMUTATION & DERIVATION - TRACING THE PAST, DRAWING THE FUTURE
-
Artist: Sibylle Schwarz (Germany), Zhao Hong (China)
-
Curator: Weihong Yan (USA)
2. The Concept: Integrating Chinese characters with surrealism; utilizing traditional Chinese "four treasures" (Chinese xuan paper, Chinese ink, Chinese brush, and inkstone) as source and medium to interpret 5,000 years of ancient Chinese culture in Western philosophical aesthetic language; and to explore the Chinese four treasures' value in art, as well as explore new art forms, fully merging the Eastern into the Western art philosophy.
3. The Value: Chinese characters, the making of China! Pictographic writing is the basis of all human writings of all mankind. Chinese characters are one of greatest inventions of mankind, and are unique among all the languages on our planet in being continuously used from prehistory till now. In addition to semantic function, from the artistic point of view Chinese characters can also be seen as expressive imagery, which can be easily accepted and loved by Western artists and non-artists as a unique art form. Meanwhile, Chinese characters have become the source of surrealist paintings; accordingly a phenomenal new form of art has happened. To explore the 5,000 year-old Chinese civilization, and to mix Western art and Chinese art, could be the art trend of the future.
In the 19th century to the 20th century, successive waves of Western artists have sought the future of Western art in the Far East. Early on, the focus was Japan, but through the twentieth century many turned also to China. Van Gogh's oil painting "Japonaiserie: The Flowering Plum Tree, 1887" with strong elements, and style of imitation of Chinese characters. The American painter Georgia O'Keeffe's "Blue Lines, 1916" represented Chinese landscape style in her drawing, and other western artists influenced by Chinese art are Pat Steir ("Study of Epitaph Painting II, 1996" in the style of Chinese rubbings and seal) and Brice Marden ("Couplet IV, 1988-89" in the traces of prominent calligraphy lines). Here I must mention the Belgian surrealist painter, poet and writer Henry Michaux (1899 ~ 1984) and his "Henri Michaux Mouvements" which were influenced by Chinese characters.
Sibylle Schwarz, a many-sided German surrealist, conceptist and DNA artist, "the queen of one-line drawing" of the world, has aggressively surpassed the above-mentioned artists, and became the only Western artist who used the Chinese four treasures to create artworks based on Chinese calligraphy done by Dr. Hong Zhao, the internationally acclaimed Chinese calligrapher. In Sibylle Schwarz’s vivid explanation and interpretation of the complexities of Chinese characters in her own rich surrealistic language with beautiful poetic lines, colors consisting of many figures, and stories that reflect and echo the meaning of each Chinese word in order to modify the theme of each character's meanings in her remarkable artworks. The artworks we will be exhibiting are the surrealist six scripts of Chinese characters "love", surrealist six scripts of Chinese characters "fish" (in mail-art format), Chinese "horse" characters on xuan paper, and so on.
Dr. Zhao Hong, distinguished professor of Chinese calligraphy of Capital Normal University, China, has been lecturing internationally on six inscriptions in the evolution of Chinese writing over 5,000 years. He co-authored the publication “The Brush Speaks the Civilization: the Art of Six Scripts of Chinese Writing," which became China's "Best Book of the Year 2014", the 1st Book of the six scripts of art from 5,000 years of China's history.
